5 Elephant Garlic Cloves - Untreated
OURganic Gardens saved Elephant Garlic For Planting
Though not as strong flavoured as true garlic, elephant garlic is a worthy ingredient in its own right. They can be eaten raw, sautéed or roasted.
Growing Schedule: Plant from September to November. Requires cold conditions to develop. Harvest when the leaves start to turn yellow around July. Dry or ‘cure’ the bulbs in a dry dark and ventilated area for a few weeks – this will allow them to store into winter
Planting Depth/Distance: Plant 10cm deep pointy end up into well prepared soil. Spaced 20-30cm apart within the row and 30cm between rows. Make sure that the cloves are planted the right way up: the flatter basal plate should be facing downwards.
Growing Conditions: Choose an open, sunny site and well-drained soil. Prior to planting, improve the soil’s structure, moisture retention and nutrient levels by incorporating organic matter. During the growing season, garlic appreciates consistent moisture, but it's important to avoid overwatering, as garlic bulbs can rot in waterlogged soil. Keep well weeded - garlic doesn't like competition. It will also allow better air circulation through the crop. When the first six leaves have turned yellow, lift and dry in the sun or in an airy shed.
