Information
Our mission is cantered on empowering people with the skills to grow their own food naturally. In all our course materials, we focus on:
- Sustainability and Resource Saving: Highlighting how growing at home saves on global resources like water, soil, and fossil fuels, promoting local action with a global impact.
- Nutritional and Community Benefits: Connecting participants with their local community and helping them realize the nutritional benefits of fresh, local food.
- Outdoor Nature-Based Learning: Getting people back to a time they remember getting their hands dirty through practical, engaging learning
This classroom-based format is perfect for this time of year, allowing participants to focus on theory, planning, and preparation before the outdoor growing season begins - and if the weather is too bad to travel we can host online too!
Spring/Summer Programme 2026
We currently offer an outreach 6 week indoor classroom program that is structured to provide comprehensive preparation for the growing season, covering essential topics from soil health to pest control.
This can be held in community groups or community gardens throughout Donegal at dates or times that suit.
- Planning Your Garden: Making a practical garden plan, understanding microclimates (wind, shade, frost), and optimal planting quantities.
- Soil Management & Nutrients: Deep dives into soil types (clay, sand, silt, loam), the importance of organic matter, soil pH, and the application of specific fertilisers (e.g., Nettle tea for Nitrogen, Comfrey for Potassium).
- Composting and Crop Rotation: Detailed instruction on creating compost, understanding the compost cycle, and implementing effective crop rotation both outdoors and in polytunnels to maintain soil balance and manage pests.
- Pest and Disease Control: Non-chemical control methods for common garden issues, including pests like slugs, greenfly, and root flies, and diseases such as blight, mildews, and rot.
